ROGUN HPP

  • The largest energy project in Tajikistan and Central Asia, it is being constructed on the Vakhsh River.
  • Its designed capacity is 3,780 MW (6 × 630 MW); upon completion, it will become the most powerful hydroelectric power plant in the region.
  • The 335-meter-high dam will be the tallest in the world; the reservoir with a volume of 13.3 km³ will allow for the regulation of the Vakhsh River's flow and increase the reliability of the entire cascade system of dams.
  • Total investment: about 6-6.5 billion US dollars.
  • The first generating unit has already been commissioned, and construction continues with the support of the World Bank, AIIB, and other international partners.
  • After reaching its full capacity, the plant will be able to generate over 14 billion kWh per year, ensuring the region's energy security and export potential.
  • The project is accompanied by extensive environmental and social programmes that comply with international standards.
  • The largest source of electricity in Tajikistan, located on the Vakhsh River, 75 km east of Dushanbe.
  • With a designed capacity of about 3,000 MW (9 × 335 MW), its nearly 300-meter-high dam was long considered the tallest in the world.
  • The reservoir with a volume of 10.5 km³ meets the region's energy and irrigation needs.
  • Investment in modernisation: about 400-500 million US dollars.
  • Since 2019, a rehabilitation project has been underway with support from the World Bank, EBRD, EIB, AIIB, and other partners.
  • The work includes modernising hydroelectric units, replacing transformers, upgrading control systems, and enhancing seismic protection.
  • The main contractor is ANDRITZ Hydro GmbH (Austria), with engineering support from Gruner AG (Switzerland).
  • The rehabilitation will increase reliability, extend the equipment's service life, and ensure stable electricity generation, particularly during the winter period.
